Our periodic roundup of new discoveries and old faves. Now including “liner notes” to help guide you through this journey and hopefully introduce you to some new, great music!
JESSICA MAGOCH -TRIVIAL PURSUIT
One of my phave Philly-based people! Jessica has sang backups and duetted with me on a few tunes and is now starting to release tracks from her upcoming album. Title track Trivial Pursuit won a John Lennon Song of the Week Award. Great jazz-tinged track with a rap that names 18ish board games!
DEVON MORE -BEAUTIFUL BITCHES
Devon is from BC and something about her reminds me in a very good way of what I used to like about people in Guelph, Ontario, where I went to university and later worked at the campus radio station. She's a bit quirky, very friendly, and almost slyly anti-corporate. I always look forward to hearing from her!
THIS MAD DESIRE -PARIS OF LOVE
One of my fave songs that I have written on the road leaving Paris, France. Haha. It's the only song that I have written on the road leaving Paris, France! There also exists a French version and twin videos that are quite similar but lip-synced in each language.
ALI WICK -DON'T WANT TO HURT
Ali is from Alberta and I really like her voice. This song is sort of wistful about that weird way we try to hang onto the pain from a breakup. Like that's going to help anything!
CHARLOTTE CARDIN -CONFETTI
I don't know Charlotte at all but she's from Montreal and this electro-pop number really gets me. It's kind of slinky and makes me feel like I'm coming home from the clubs in Montreal.
WAX MANNEQUIN -RED BRAIN
Chris Adeney who IS Wax Mannequin is a friend of mine here in Hamilton. His lyrics are usually very interesting and this one is no exception. I think this concept was one he was fleshing out during the pandemic. Very cool stuff!
VIKINGUR OLAFSSON -THE PLOVER AND THE RAVEN
Everyone's fave Icelandic classical pianist!
PRINCE -GETT OFF (EXTENDED REMIX)
The scream at the beginning of this? Priceless. I love Prince and this track is super-funky!
ICANDY -KEEP DAT NIGGA
This one was trending on TikTok. I like the rap but I REALLY love the Boogie Shoes sample and have included the original later in this playlist.
ICE CUBE -THE NIGGA YA LOVE TO HATE
I saw Ice Cube perform this in the Twin Cities in Minnesota in 1992. It was and is such a great track. Ice Cube's the coolest!
URGE OVERKILL -TIN FOIL
While the great UO is known for their cover of Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon, I always preferred their album tracks and I have a vintage UO sticker on my guitar case.
SKYE WALLACE -COAL IN YOUR WINDOW
Almost invariably if you check out This Mad Desire Radio on Spotify, you will find a track by Skye and usually Terra Lightfoot. Spotify seems to think my music goes well with theirs. I can't disagree!
JON SPENCER BLUES EXPOSION -FUCK SHIT UP
Jon Spencer is one of the greatest performers I've ever seen and this was the tour I saw at the Phoenix in Toronto.
THIS MAD DESIRE -MY SHIT'S FUCKED UP
Of course. Lol.
BEASTIE BOYS -HEY LADIES
PIXIES -GIGANTIC
A couple classics.
WINE LIPS -GET YOUR MONEY
This band slays me. All of their songs are really exciting.
KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND -BOOGIE SHOES
As promised, the original. You might note that the lyrics have an almost opposite message to the tune that samples this... Which do you prefer?
And with that, this wraps up this week’s playlist. Hope you enjoyed it!!
