Our weekly (or however often) roundup of this week’s discoveries and old faves. Usually it’s friends of mine or just music I like. Now including “liner notes” to help guide you through this journey and hopefully introduce you to some new, great music!
THIS MAD DESIRE -MY SHIT'S FUCKED UP
Our latest Secret Cover! This one is by Warren Zevon and I recorded it at the library. I like working there because you are limited to two hours so it forces you to work quickly without over-analyzing. I recorded all of this in about an hour and a few weeks later, I re-sang a couple of words. The descending guitar lick in this is super satisfying to play.
THE MARS VOLTA –CERULEA
I can't believe I have not been listening to the Mars Volta. I had this idea that they were noisy and complicated. But listen to how dreamy this song is! I am definitely going to check out more of their music.
KARI LYN –ANYWAYS
Kari's new song is about missing her dad. She's got a great voice and sang backups on my version of Deck The Halls. And she's originally from PEI, which is pretty neat.
SATE –WARRIOR
I was recently on a Zoom with Sate watching a recent concert film in which she and Fefe Dobson both performed. This track is blistering!
U.S. GIRLS -SO TYPICALLY NOW
This song makes me think of St. Vincent, who I love, and the 80s-style reverb on the drums is divine. Also Geordie Gordon is involved with this act and I used to know him when I worked at CFRU in Guelph but I actually know his dad James Gordon, folk singer and politician, more because he was good friends with my neighbour in Eden Mills, Ontario, who kept hiring us to help stage these community plays, which included music. I can't believe that was my full-time job for a few summers.
AVA KING -I DO IT FOR THE LIKES
Ava has recorded my friend MJoy down in Oakland, CA. This song is catchy and the lyrics are soooo typically now.
YOUNG FRIEND -MET THIS GIRL ON THE INTERNET
This reminds me a bit of Sufjan Stevens but with dorkier lyrics (which I like).
GABRIELLE SHONK -HOW WE USED TO BE
LOYALTIES -SECOND PLACE
AWFULTUNE -DARLING GET UP
Pretty solid confessional songwriting. Extremely well-produced.
FEFE DOBSON –STUTTERING
As .mentioned, I was reintroduced to Fefe from watching that live concert video. I had forgotten how much I like this song. It's very catchy and makes me think of Rihanna.
ARAZ -DIVE BAR
A friend recommended this track.
KROLL SHOW CAST -BEATS AND RICE
This is genius. An incredible send-up of so many hip hop and R&B cliches. "It's yr boy Scooba!" I laugh out loud every time.
BULLY -LOSE YOU (FT. SOCCER MOMMY)
I always check out what Soccer Mommy is up to. This song sounds like Veruca Salt and the Breeders. I love it!
IAN ANDREWS & THE SMOKIN' SCOUNDRELS -DAMN SURE BLUES
Ian's a friend of mine and a great guitarist. I've got an advance of a new album from him and it slays. This record is real classic blues rock like the Rolling Stones or the Black Crowes.
THIS MAD DESIRE -ANTIFA AND THE SUPREMACISTS
One of my faves from my American Dream release.
PRINCE -X'S FACE
I read that Prince played this for Madonna one night at Paisley Park. The groove is unreal and the sonics are sublime.
LOST SIGNAL -DARTH VADER'S BIRTHDAY
Matt is from Norwich, UK, and I met him on Twitter the other day and already he's remixing my upcoming version of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit!
TECHNOTRONIC -PUMP UP THE JAM
After watching Cunk on Earth, I'm obsessed with this track!
U2 -"40"
This is the 40th playlist...
WARREN ZEVON -MY SHIT'S FUCKED UP
Here is the original version of the song I covered.
And with that, this wraps up this week’s playlist. Hope you enjoyed it!!
