Our weekly (or however often) roundup of this week’s discoveries and old faves. Usually it’s friends of mine or just music I like. Now including “liner notes” to help guide you through this journey and hopefully introduce you to some new, great music!
SEMATARY SPAWN –EXORCISM OF THE DEAD
This song cracks me up. My friend Mike Trebilcock scores all kinds of horror movies and writes songs for them as well. This is one of those tunes. Most people who know Mike probably know him because he had this band called the Killjoys that won a JUNO and toured with Green Day and so on. I met him because we were both teaching at the same place and I occasionally filled in for him if he was sick or had a gig. Very cool guy and great guitarist. He actually did a 2-3 shows playing guitar in my act. But this song totally makes me laugh and gets us into the Halloween mode!!
THIS MAD DESIRE –STAND UP AND DREAM AGAIN
This was the first single from our American Dream release. I still think this song is great!! What do YOU think??
WET LEG –DAISY
I’ve been slowly getting into Wet Leg. Definitely this track has a cool vibe. Also I like how they do this sort of spoken-word tone singing. Are they singing lines by Kanye West here? I don’t even know.
LTtheMONK –CLASS OF ‘23
I like this guy. He’s Ha amilton-based hip hop artist who shares a birthday with me! I was actually going to contact him to see if he wants to guest on a couple of tracks I’m working on that are more in the line of what he already does.
PAUPIERE –NUE
One of my recent French-language finds!
PERRY FARRELL –CLING TO LIFE (MORCHEEBA REMIX)
I lived with this girl for half a year and we got together to meet before we moved in together and found out we were both Morcheeba fans. Ironically, Perry Farrell’s parts are my least favorite aspects of this remix.
TINA TARA –I’M ON FIRE
Very much digging this track. It reminds me of SIA a bit. I met her on one of these many online music mixers I have attended. Great chorus on this one!
SALVO –BLOOD // WATER
I don’t know Salvo but I came across her on TikTok. Looking forward to learning more about her!
SLOAN –MAGICAL THINKING
I’m not a huge fan of Sloan although I really liked their breakthrough song Underwhelmed a million years ago. I have a ton of respect for them though and think they write/play some very hooky songs!
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS –BEGUILED
Just trying to keep up with The Great Pumpkin here.
OK GO –I WON’T LET YOU DOWN
As any of our regular viewers are aware, Dan Konopka not only drums in OK Go but in lots of our songs too. Sometimes I like to visit the Mothership so to speak and remind myself of what these guys are all about. Great band, great songs, great drummer!
PUSCIFER –THE UNDERWHELMING (IMAGINED BY JAMES IHA)
I usually like Puscifer and I like that James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins is involved in remixing this. Sounds great!
JOE MCLEOD –SKYDIVING WITH AN OLD PAIR OF SHOES
This reminds me of a lot of bands I toured with in the 2000s. It came up as a suggestion from Spotify. Sort of a melancholy feel here.
NICK CAVE –AS I SAT SADLY BY HER SIDE
Hands down, one of my fave tracks by anyone ever. The lyrics, the piano, the violin. Unbelievable. Mystical even!
FISHBONE –SUNLESS SATURDAY
I always like Fishbone but never listen to them so I thought I’d toss something of theirs into this collection.
And with that, this wraps up this week’s playlist. Hope you enjoyed it!!
