Our weekly (or however often) roundup of this week’s discoveries and old faves. Usually it’s friends of mine or just music I like. Now including “liner notes” to help guide you through this journey and hopefully introduce you to some new, great music!
REVE –TONGUE
I’ve been really digging her tracks. She’s based now in Toronto and actually when I noticed she was promoting this track, I tagged Gene Simmons on Twitter as he should be aware of anything tongue-related!
THIS MAD DESIRE –RUNNING WILD RUNNING FREE
Our latest single!
BY OCTOPI –FINGERNAILS
I first met their singer Kyla Konopka on the day I recorded the vocal for Running Wild Running Free. This is their latest single and it’s leaps and bounds ahead of their prior singles. Very solid work from another Toronto act!
TED LEO AND THE PHARMACISTS –WHERE HAVE ALL THE RUDE BOYS GONE
I had a hankering for some Ted Leo. I used to listen to him quite a bit back when I worked at CFRU. If you haven’t checked him out before, you should!
DEVON COLE –W.I.T.C.H.
This song has been blowing up around Toronto. I think I came across her on TikTok or Instagram.
PAMELA SUOZZI –RAINY NIGHT
Pamela is a friend of mine in Switzerland. She has a beautiful voice and is writing some cool songs. Looking forward to hearing what she does next!
JONAH SAPPHIC –TIRED EYES
Jonah is a relative newbie to the music world out of Alberta. We met on our friend Tianda’s Discord (as with Pamela).
ESTEBAN ORTIZ / SEE SEE BEATS –SET ME ON FIRE (SUMMERSHINE REMIX)
My friend Cas, See See Beats, is involved with this and not only have we collaborated but he has music on the new Disney movie Zombies 3!
X.ARI –DON’T DIE WITHOUT ME
We were on a Zoom call a couple months ago which is where I first heard about X. Ari. She’s based in LA but don’t let that fool you. She’s from Toronto! (Are we noticing a Toronto theme here?? Totally not intended.)
PEARL JAM –QUICK ESCAPE (LIVE)
I’ve seen Pearl Jam quite a few times but not since the 2000s. Sounds like they’ve still got it. This is a live track from their last album Gigaton.
THE 1975 –PART OF THE BAND
This song has beautiful sonics. Whoever mixed this deserves an award.
THE EVENS –KING OF KINGS
Sometimes this song pops in my head for no reason. After Fugazi, this has been Ian Mackaye’s main act. It’s unbelievably cool.
SLEATER-KINNEY –YOU’RE NO ROCK’N’ROLL FUN
As you may know, I’m a huge fan of the Sleaters!
THE NORTHERN PIKES –GIRL WITH A PROBLEM
I like to mix in some older classics and this one totally fits the bill. I became sick of this song when it initially came out because it was all over the radio but fast forward from the 1990s to now and suddenly it’s a refreshing trip down memory lane. Actually when listening now, I appreciate more the incredible songcraft and production involved in this tune.
TRAGICALLY HIP –PICTURE MY FACE (LIVE)
I just spent a week acting in a movie in First Ontario Centre or what was called Copps Colliseum, the major sports arena in Hamilton and it brought back a lot of memories. The first time I went to Copps was to see the Hip so this is the Hip playing at Copps Colliseum (in 2007 so not the same show I saw) and here they are covering a classic track by old-skool Hamilton band Teenage Head!
LE TIGRE –TKO
Because the movie was about women’s boxing, I thought this song was perfect!
TOM SEGURA –MIKE TYSON
I think this speaks for itself.
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS –MELLOWSHIP SLINKY IN B MAJOR
This song mentions Mike Tyson…
BILLIE HOLIDAY –JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS
And of course, you can never lose with Billie Holiday!
And with that, this wraps up this week’s playlist. Hope you enjoyed it!!
